マルレーネ・デュマスは、主に人物を題材とした具象絵画で知られます。個人から群像まで、流れるような輪郭線と独特な色彩で表される人物はいずれも鮮烈な印象を残します。
「私は間接的なイメージと直接的な感情を用いて描く」との言葉通り、デュマスはメディアに流通する写真や画像などから着想を得て描くことがあり、そこに個人的な体験や皮肉、あるいはユーモアを交えた批判的視点を織り込むことで重層的な意味合いを持つ作品を生み出します。

代表作《ブロークン・ホワイト》(2006)は、横たわる女性の顔を描いた油彩画で、その脱力した表情と艶かしい白い肌は、写真家の荒木経惟が撮影したモノクロ写真からインスパイアされています。画面から立ち上がるそこはかとない官能性は、《白鳥》（2005）との対比でより一層際立ちます。白鳥に姿を変えたゼウスが王妃レダを犯すというギリシャ神話を想起させる本作は、《ブロークン・ホワイト》と同様、赤や黄をうっすらと孕む「損なわれた白」で描かれ、その内奥に潜む感情を照らし出すかのように鈍い光をたたえています。デュマスの場合、人種的な意味において純潔性を示唆する「白」が用いられる時、そこには必ずネガティブな結びつきが暗示されているのだと言えます。

《画家》(1994)は、デュマスの娘、ヘレーナをモデルとして描いた一枚です。両手や腹にべったりと絵具をつけた幼い「画家」は、描く主体であると同時に描かれる対象でもあります。この入れ子のような主題を通して、デュマスは自身を幼女に投影しながら、「画家は男性、モデルは女性」という歴史的な決まり事を挑発的に覆し、見る者にさまざまな問いを投げかけます。

アパルトヘイト下の南アフリカで育ったデュマスは、政治的、社会的テーマを含む作品でも知られます。《邪悪は凡庸である》（1984）はデュマスの自画像で、かつてナチスの残酷さを語る際に用いられた有名な言葉「悪の凡庸さ」から題名をとっています。白と黒の対比が際立つ本作は、南アフリカで育った白人女性というデュマスのジレンマを示唆し、この地でもまた差別や偏見といった悪がまかり通ってきたという冷酷な事実を浮かび上がらせます。

一方、デュマスの実践において、ドローイングも重要な位置を占めています。1996年にギャラリー小柳での初個展で発表された〈ヤング・ボーイ〉は、日本人を描きたいという画家の要望のために集められた新聞や雑誌の切り抜きが元になっています。さまざまな性的欲望に対してあからさまに開かれているように見える若き男性の肉体が、絵具を滲ませたデュマス特有のたらしこみの技法によって、儚く、得難い対象として描かれています。当初の官能性に満ちた男娼の主題は、のちに聖セバスティアヌスに扮する三島由紀夫のイメージへと続き、さらなる展開を見せました。いずれの作品においても、デュマスは古典的なメディウムを通して、個人や社会の複雑な様相を巧みに掬い上げ、描くことの根源的な意味を問い続けています。
