ベルギー出身のミヒャエル・ボレマンスは、30代に入った1990年代半ばに写真表現から絵画へと本格的に転向し、瞬く間に国際的評価を確立しました。精緻な描写や日常の題材を特徴とするフランドル絵画の伝統を想起させる絵画技法に加え、象徴主義やシュルレアリスムなど、自国の歴史の系譜にある神秘性や不条理さを感じさせる作品は、具象的でありながらも論理的な解釈を阻み、見る者にあらゆる思索の余地を残します。

ボレマンスの絵画の特徴の一つに、人物がひたすら何かの作業に没頭する姿という主題が挙げられます。《Girl with Hands》（2013）は題名の通り、女性の手の動作以外に取り立てて描かれるものはなく、その没個性的な出立ちと、儀式的に思われる手元の作業に向けられた視線は、鑑賞者との心理的な交わりを静かに回避するかのようです。「対象は私にとって物である」との言葉通り、ボレマンスにとって描かれる主題は特定の人物の肖像ではなく、いかなる文脈や属性も持たずに、ただ張り詰めた静けさの中に存在する普遍的な客体に過ぎないのです。ボレマンスが単一のモチーフを異なるスタイルで描いた本作品群は、新しい挑戦として注目を集めました。

2008年に描かれた《Commutation》は、複数のコルクの栓が何の脈略もなく並べられている様子を描いた一枚です。ボレマンスには珍しい静物画であるものの、主題は人物を描いた他の作品と同じ部屋で、同じ光のもとで捉えられており、下地に主にベージュを用いたキャンバスや、それを活かす薄塗りで抑制の効いた色調の油絵具といった特徴的な絵画手法がここでも発揮されています。その様子は、同年に描かれた《Automat(3)》にも通じます。若い女性が後ろ手を組む様子を斜め背後から捉えているものの、奇妙なことに両脚から下がおもむろに省略され、彼女はさながらチェスの駒かトルソーのように一つのオブジェとして存在しているように見えます。こうしたどこか不穏な描写は、何らかの意味づけを欲する鑑賞者を置き去りに、謎めいた印象を残すに留まります。

ボレマンスは絵画作品と並行して、映像作品やドローイングも制作しています。《The Feeding》（2006）では、3人の人物が宙に浮く大きな白い板紙の束の周囲に立ち、手の平を上に向けてその間に差し入れている様子を映し出しています。匿名性の高い人物によって無益な運動が繰り返されるものの、緻密なカメラワークの中に浮かび上がる禁欲的で空虚な場面は、ボレマンスの静謐で、物語性に依拠しない絵画作品の延長線上にあるものだと言えます。
